Frequently asked questions

I don’t have a science background. Does that matter?

Absolutely not! The whole premise of our tours is to explain the landscapes we visit so that everyone can understand. We go back to basics and build your understanding during the trip. So everyone will have a wonderful time learning and sharing as we experience amazing places together.

Are the hikes very rigorous?

Most trips have a number of small hikes that will take you to see amazing things.  These are almost always on well-constructed trails and normally are less than a mile return.  Some trips have longer hikes – (up to 5 miles return) but these are ALWAYS optional.  Leaders always explain the hike beforehand so you can judge if your level of ability is up for the ‘challenge’.

What if I get ill or injured while away?

Sometimes things happen – from a reaction to the local water, a fall when hiking, blisters etc.  Trip leaders are there to help you.  We are happy to work with you to make sure you are comfortable and safe at all times.  Leaders are first-aid trained.  If you require medical attention, we will arrange for you to get to the nearest facility asap.

Will I share a room?

Our price is based on everyone sharing a  room with one or two other people.  These are never dorm-style accommodation – but very nice and often spacious rooms.   Travel partners and spouses will normally have their own room.  If you are traveling alone and want your own room, we offer a ‘Single Room Supplement option where you pay more for privacy.

Do you arrange my flights to and from the trip?

Sorry – we do not offer that service.  We have found that people like to pick and chose their own airlines and flights.  We will tell you exactly when the group meets and where, so you can arrange flights to match.  We almost always start and end at an airport.  On some trips there may be different airports – so check the details we send you very carefully.  If you wish to arrive a few days early or stay after the trip you can do so.   You just need to get to the meeting point on time.  Please note that we are unable to pick you up or drop you off at any other location than that published for the trip.

Will I need a passport or other documentation?

If you are joining a trip outside of your country of residence, you will need a passport with more than 6 months validity from the trip’s end date.  Depending on the location, you may also require a visa.  We will provide you information and guidance about all these well in advance of your trip so you can arrange to have the documentation.   You may also need official paperwork proving you are fully vaccinated from COVID and register online.  Agin, we will provide you details.

Do I have to be fully vaccinated from COVID to attend a trip?

Yes.   For your safety and the safety of other participants and leaders, you have to be fully vaccinated to travel with us. Travel restrictions imposed by countries and states will require you to be fully vaccinated and you will need to provide proof.

What is normally included?

After pickup, we will provide you all accommodation and transport and most meals. Depending on the trip, breakfasts and most dinners are included. Lunches will be on your own and we stop in places for you to purchase something, or we arrange to go to supermarkets during the week so you can buy items to take with you during the day. Alcohol is NOT included. Entry to museums, parks, and other attractions list in the itinerary are all included in the price. We do not include flights/taxis to and from our pick-up and drop-off locations or any pre or post-accommodation.

Are children allows on the trip?

Due to the nature of our trips and insurance, we limit our trips to those who are 16 years of age and older. There is no upper age limit!

Do I need to take out travel insurance?

Yes. It is a condition of traveling with us that you have taken out travel insurance for your time on the trip. This is to cover YOU. The level you take out is your own decision, but we suggest full medical coverage when you are out of your area for medical coverage, flight delay coverage, lost bag coverage, and coverage in case you need to pull out of the trip dues to illness or illness of a family member. We also strongly suggest looking into getting coverage for COVID-related issues. Please note that once the published refund date passes, we can’t refund your trip fees or any other costs. However, if we cancel a trip, you will receive a full refund.

Can you cater for my food allergies?

Yes. As long as you provide us early notice using the medical forms we will provide you a few months out from the trip, we can cater for any food allergies. We will be unable to cater for issues if you don’t inform us until we are on the trip.

Can you cater for my disability?

We would be happy to talk to you if you have a disability that would need to be catered for. Some trips may not be suitable due to the terrain, van transportation, etc. We are happy to provide you more information and advice and to see if we can work out a solution.

Will you let us know what to pack?

Yes. We will provide you with packing suggestions as well as any additional equipment we suggest you bring on the trip.

What additional information will I be sent?

We will send you a number of newsletters leading up to the trip with more details about the weather, packing, meeting points, etc. We also will hold a zoom meeting around one month out of the trip so you can meet other participants and ask any questions. You can always contact us at gary@geoetc.com if you have any questions.
