Gary Lewis is a world renown geoscience educator who has been running field experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds to some of the most exciting parts of our planet.

Author of over 30 geoscience publications for educators and the general public, Gary has a deep knowledge of our Earth’s underlying processes and uses that knowledge to explain landscapes and Earth-based phenomenon to participants on his trips – often with culture, history, and an environmental perspective thrown in.   And always with great humor and enthusiasm.

Born and raised in Australia, Gary worked in education and outreach for CSIRO and set up the Education program for Geoscience Australia (the Australian version of the USGS).  In 2003 he moved to the USA and became the Senior Director of Education and Outreach for the Geological Society of America.  In 2015 he established GEOetc LLC.

Gary has been running field experiences for people since the 1980s.   As well as running trips inside Australia and the continental USA, he frequently runs trips to Iceland and Hawaii.  He has also been involved in trips to Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and more.

Gary is often joined by other scientists and leaders with vast knowledge and experience to add another dimension to the experience.

A few testimonials from our previous trips…

My first experience with Gary definitely won’t be my last. The ability to see and enjoy the wonders of Iceland from a different perspective is what makes it unlike any other tour, the appreciation for not just what’s there, but how and why it’s there is what makes it so unique.

Iceland with Gary Lewis is the real deal! We experienced outstanding geologic features (volcanoes, glaciers, icebergs, geysers) with expert educational commentary for a very reasonable price. All trip participants were good team players by sharing, loading gear, arriving on time, camaraderie. Accommodations and dining were excellent!. We will travel with Gary again!

This Iceland tour hit the key high lights of a visit to Iceland but provided a much deeper understanding of their dynamic nature and the dependence of Icelanders’ and glaciation and volcanism for their survival and the development o their culture.

Keith

Anyone can go to Iceland and see sites, but this opportunity allowed me to see the “non-tourist” locations and understand what I was seeing and how it really impacts the locals and their livelihood.

Charity

This trip exceeded my expectations. Iceland is beautiful and this trip included waterfalls, geology, flora and fauna – and excellent culinary adventures! Gary is an excellent leader with a fantastic sense of humor and is knowledgeable in communication to all levels.

Gary provides a rare educational geological experience, worth every penny. Priceless experiences in the field with geological landscapes that are explained in understandable terms for the amateur geologist. You do not need to have any background to really appreciate and learn something new about our planet.
